The recently released Australia Council’s “Do you really expect to get paid” – is a really good doc to read. I’m always frustrated by the fact that I have many excellent artist friends who struggle to survive.
Some artists of course take the course of making work that is fashionable, saleable – and who can blame them, really? However, I want my friends (& all good artists) to continue doing work that excites and inspires me. But I don’t want them to be always worrying about how to pay the next bill.
This report finds that the main obstacles for artists are: “lack of time to do creative work due to other responsibilities, lack of work opportunities and lack of financial return from creative practice.”
